Walls to Live Beside, Rooms to Own: The Chartwell Show

Walls to Live Beside, Rooms to Own is a response to our relationship to life at home – one that has been significantly impacted for many, if not all, of us during the global pandemic. Artists are no different, and this exhibition looks at how they have responded to the materials of home.

The identity taken from the sketches and hand writing of the curator Natasha Conland, has an immediate and personal look and feel. A palette of mustard, brick and burnt orange was selected – common colours of materials used to build NZ homes in the 50–70’s – brick and tile, wallpaper and paint.

Special build posters were created from painted pegboard – a material commonly found in suburban homes across NZ. Placed around the city centre they successfully intriegued and attracted visitors to the show.

Promotional videos were also produced using the hand drawn type overlayed over images from the show cut together with bold text and punchy music – ‘home, where you live, leave, build, break, assemble, create, entangle...’
